I don't know about cheating holding gas prices up. As wholesale prices fall the higher retail price is probably due to retailers using the differential to catch up on the losses they took over the last year or so of the pandemic. Who can blame them for trying to catch up as fast as possible? No one knows if they'll get the chance because we don't know what's next around the corner. It's easy for desk jockeys in Washington to eye statistical price differentials etc, and pronounce that this or that should be the case, it's quite another thing to be behind a cash register looking for the cash to pay the bills.
