If you are going to be strategic, you need to know what the rules are.
Schumer knows what rules would have prevailed if the gov't was
shut down. That is what he knew we had to avoid. We would also
be beholden to the republicans to get back open and they won't
do it because they can use the chaos to grab more power.

Wrong... The Republicans would not come back begging to reopen, instead
they welcome the turmoil and chaos as the excuse they need to declare
martial law. Remember, as Schumer has tried to tell us, Trump would
have additional powers to do the objectionable things he wants to do
and you could not take him to court because it would be lawful. All
you could do is rant and rage, protest and march, and give him the
excuse to declare martial law, and there would be no coming back
from that downhill slide.

Schumer's point is that the rules, during a shutdown, give the President
way more power than you'd be willing to risk him having, especially
since it would make what he's doing legal. He would have the power
to act legally and we'd lost the option of challenging him in court for
that same reason. Worse, to re-open the gov't we'd be at the mercy of
the Republican majority.

House Dems break with Schumer over vote to avoid government shutdown
One thing I know Schumer is right about is that
if the gov't shuts down, it will stay shut until Democrats
are forced to agree to whatever terms the GOP offers them.
As we know the longer the shutdown goes on the more
pressure there will be on both parties to get it opened again.
Only the Democrats, who are out of power, have no way back
from the lies and distortions the Republican megaphone will
spew on the public like a snake spewing venom.

Schumer says that if he let the government shutdown, the rules under that
situation would give the President too much power to do the things he
wants to do. That would mean Trump would win everything he wants
with no effective way left to oppose him according to the rulesl

Republicans are betting that by demolishing the rule of law they can create
the turmoil and chaos, Trump needs to declare martial law and crown himself
King of America. Their bet is that American Citizens will not be able to
figure out how to take the country back and restore the rule of Constitutional
law. They also believe that the military will take unlawful orders and will
be unable to refuse to support the new dictatorship that, like Hitler, will
overtake the country and destroy the democratic republic to create a
nuclear armed Fourth Reich!
