While the democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi, hashed out a bi-partisan 3 trillion dollar citizens support bill, by looking at the data and targeting the money where it is needed, rents and business alike. The Republicans in the Senate, led by Mitch McConnell, are, as usual, guessing that workers are lazy and are refusing to go back to work because they're getting a few more dollars from unemployment insurance. Never mind that most workers go to work because they love their jobs, while others are ambitious and want to get ahead, neither of which unemployment insurance provides. It doesn't dawn on Republicans in the Senate, that people might be staying off the job because they don't want to risk bringing a deadly disease home to their families. No surprise that Republicans like Moscow Mitch see workers as slovenly and lazy, unwilling to work unless forced by dint of the economic whip. Not a whit of compassion for the suffering the pandemic has caused. President Trump never has a word of sorrow or a paragraph of compassion for anyone but himself.

Putin and Xi could not be happier to see our capitalist systems preparing to move against millions of people because they fear that if those people were to be helped by their government, they would not go back to work. This view is wrong because it is built on the belief that people only work because they have to work to survive. That is not true, most people work because they love their professions and trades. They would probably work for free if they could. Almost every country in the free world seems to realize this and they reign in the capitalist by putting the needs of the people first. They will still allow you to amass huge mega fortunes, but only after the people's basic needs are taken care of first.

Consumer spending shifts during pandemic
If a business cannot continue to pay it's bills, the owners much savage their savings to keep the business alive. If an owner is only a few years away from retirement, they may not be willing to risk making the additional investment and risk their own retirement. They'll simply try to sell the business, but in this market there isn't much hope of that, so they simply close up and walk away. The decision to close is not a mere financial calculation, but has to factor in the life span of the owner and his/her retirement prospects.

It used to be that minimum wage jobs were jobs that were expected to be held by youths who were still living at home and therefore could afford to accept these low wage jobs. Today we no longer have an economy that offers minimum wage jobs to children still living at home and we now find these jobs being held by older people living on their own and trying to raise families on these low wages. Even while the companies that are offering these jobs are no longer "mom and pop" outfits but are instead huge multinational conglomerates and other large publicly traded corporations.
Meanwhile corporations enjoy paying low wages here in America where there are laws that limit what government can do, unlike overseas where governments exercise considerably more power with fewer restrictions. Which is why they resist raising the minimum wage, because they either don't want to take the jobs off shore, or, more likely they can't. But they can easily afford to pay higher wages, but why should they? When their employee's can make do with the low pay by qualifying for public assistance, the corporations appreciate the public subsidy.
