Forty years ago, conservatives awakened to the fact that their agenda was getting little traction in American public life. So they hatched a plan turn things around. Pooling their considerable financial resources, they would invest in the marketplace of ideas and fund books, professors, journalists – anything to promote, amplify, and disseminate their right-wing worldview. In short, they would buy the American mind.

Quite a bargain, that. One of their most successful investments was the support of an eager young man who got his start writing for the Dartmouth Review , a conservative newspaper founded in 1980 by disgruntled students who thought that the college’s daily paper was way too liberal. Dinesh D’Souza was carefully groomed to flower into what he is today – a vitriolic, one-sided, outrageously craven wingnut who will say anything and everything as long as it supports the most rancid right-wing agenda. You might think of him as the inhabitant of the deepest, darkest spot in our political discourse, the Mariana Trench of American intellectual life.    READ MORE

Annie Dookhan, the former state chemist at the center of a massive lab scandal which may jeopardize thousands of drug cases, could face decades behind bars if convicted, said Attorney General Martha Coakley.

Dookhan, 34, pleaded not guilty this afternoon in Boston Municipal Court to two counts of obstruction of justice and falsely pretending to hold a degree from a college or university. She posted $10,000 bail late this afternoon.

Prosecutors said today Dookhan would sprinkle cocaine on negative test results, test them again, and report the positive finding; and test a few samples out of a batch of 25 and list them all as positive.

Coakley added Dookhan could face more charges as the investigation continues. Each obstruction charge carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

“This is not the end of the charging,” Coakley vowed.

State police arrested Dookhan this morning at her home in Franklin, leading her out of her modest split-level after handcuffing her inside shortly before noon. She did not speak and kept her head down as she was led down her walkway in front of reporters to one unmarked police car, then again to a cruiser which sped away up the suburban street not far from Interstate 495 with the rogue chemist inside.  READ MORE

Emanuela Orlandi was kidnapped for sex parties, with Vatican security acting on behalf of foreign diplomats, a controversial priest inside the Holy See told an Italian newspaper.

Orlandi, a 15-year-old schoolgirl, disappeared from Rome’s streets 29 years ago after a flute lesson.
Italy has long fixated on her disappearance, and now Father Gabriele Amorth has added to the mystery by saying Vatican security abducted her for sex parties with foreign diplomats, The Telegraph reported.

“Parties were organized, with a Vatican gendarme acting as the ‘recruiter’ of the girls,” Amorth told La Stampa, as translated by The Telegraph. “The network involved diplomatic personnel from a foreign embassy to the Holy See. I believe Emanuela ended up a victim of this circle.”

Amorth, who said Orlandi was later murdered, is no stranger to controversy.

Pope John Paul II appointed him the Vatican’s chief exorcist, and he generated international headlines late last year when he claimed yoga and Harry Potter were both evil.

Former News International chief Rebekah Brooks blasted British prosecutors Tuesday for charging her with obstructing the investigation into phone hacking at media mogul Rupert Murdoch's British newspapers, calling the case "an expensive sideshow."

Brooks, whose husband, driver and personal assistant also face charges, said she is "baffled" and angered by the decision to charge "those closest to me."

"One day the details of this case will emerge, and people will see today as nothing more than an expensive sideshow -- a waste of public money as a result of an unjust and weak decision," she told reporters outside her lawyer's office.   READ MORE

NYPD anti-terror detectives compiled lists of businesses, stores and mosques linked to Muslim New Yorkers with Syrian, Albanian and Egyptian roots.

But they didn’t do a very thorough job.

The owners of most of the establishments listed in the “Syrian Locations of Concern Report” told The Daily News Friday they are neither Syrian nor Muslim.

“I think it’s pretty comical that my store would be in this report,” said David Idy, owner of Kings Row, a clothing store on Avenue U in Brooklyn. “I happen to be a Sephardic Jew. My family is from Egypt, but I was actually raised in Bensonhurst and consider myself an American.”

Cops also listed a Bronx barber shop called “Dino’s European Hair Style,” noting that its owner is Albanian and its close proximity to the North Bronx Muslim Center.

Shop owner Sammy Eirovic said, “I’m not Albanian, I’m Montenegran.”

“Honestly, I’m really surprised anybody would be spying on me,” he said. “We just cut hair.”

Among the supposedly Egyptian-owned businesses listed by the NYPD were defunct nightclubs like the Cleopatra on 5th Ave. in Brooklyn, which served liquor — something observant Muslims shun.

The reports were obtained by the Associated Press, whose ongoing probe of NYPD spying has sparked sharp criticism from Islamic and civil rights groups — and prompted strong rebuttals by Mayor Bloomberg and Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Five senior 'Sun' journalists, two MoD staff and a police officer taken in dawn swoop as new front opens in bribery scandal

Rupert Murdoch was last night preparing to fly to Britain to join frantic efforts to secure the future of The Sun after the arrests of five senior journalists by police investigating allegations of bribery and phone hacking.


Police swooped on eight individuals between 6am and 8am yesterday, arresting the five Sun journalists, two Ministry of Defence staff and a police officer. The arrests came hard on the heels of five related arrests two weeks ago when four senior Sun journalists and a police officer were questioned in connection with bribery allegations. All eight were released on bail last night.

The latest astonishing development, which came two days after the Leveson inquiry into press standards finished its first session, prompted fury among the newspaper's staff, amid allegations that those arrested had been "thrown to the wolves" in an effort to bolster the embattled News Corp empire, and, particularly, to rekindle its hopes of taking over BSkyB. The police were acting on information provided by News International, owner of The Sun and Times newspapers, through its Management and Standards Committee (MSC).

Amid fury among the paper's editorial staff, Mr Murdoch was forced to issue a pledge last night that he was not preparing to sell the newspaper, via his chief executive, Tom Mockridge. Senior staff were told that Mr Murdoch planned to fly to London to calm the situation. Journalists including the paper's deputy editor were bailed after being questioned in connection with allegations of making illegal payments to police officers and other officials.   READ MORE

 

News of the World newspaper shuts down! (attackers of disabled in UK)

the UK tabloids have for past 2+ years been viciously attacking the disabled and those claiming welfare, in a manner so extreme, so constant that it is not hyperbole to equate it with the "Jew baiting" of the monstrous newspapers of Nazi Germany.

But now, they have come undone.

* They hacked it is alleged, the phones of abducted, raped and murdered schoolgirls (interfering with ongoing criminal investigations at the time)
* the phones of family of service personnel who died in Afghanistan
* the phones of Cabinet Ministers (which is espionage and treason by UK law)
* Bribed directly London police for salacious, private details of people and crimes etc (which breaks several laws, and the Metropolitan Police have been mired in abuse, corruption and scandal for 40 odd years. Force should be broken up and cleaned root and branch)
* Also another very nasty issue is the Tommy Shreridan case, I may not like Sherdian, but if they did interfere with the 2nd court case...getting a politician jailed in revenge for him beating them at the 1st libel case and to "flex their muscles as warning to other politicians"....that is a threat ot democracy itself.

And the Conservative party leader, the now Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, hired the guy who is, allegedly, behind much of this to be his PR Guru!

Haha, it's good to see such momumental shitheads fall!!
