While Hindenburg didn't want to appoint Hitler, the Nazi Party
had enough seats in the legislature so that their walkouts prevented
much-needed laws from being passed, causing a public frenzy that
Hindenburg had to deal with. Business leaders also were afraid of
The public outcries, and so they convinced Hindenburg that Hitler
could be controlled by them. Unfortunately they were to discover
that Hitler could not be controlled.
