Mitch knows that he can get the present benefits of what he is saying and that the time to "Pay" for the deceit is at least 4 years in the future by which time it will be forgotten. This is the calculation that many Republican Senators make. By the time to pay for their deceptions comes around (read elections), all will be forgotten.
