Now it seems that Putin has been giving out generalships to unqualified sycophants rather than skilled and practiced professionals. He believed that his troops were equal to the task because he had been told they were. He thought the troops would be welcomed with opened arms because nobody "dared tell the emperor he actually had no clothes".
