The upshot, long story short, of political theory, is, if there is a one-party system in power, there is no leverage against the paranoid purges that are sure to ensue.  Worse yet is that "haves" are more likely than "have nots" to be the subject of purges.  So, if you're supporting Republican party voter suppression efforts, think about the chances you'll be purged later,  or perhaps you will enjoy being forced to bow down and kowtow to the "dear" leader.
