How Can We Stop the Mexican Drug Insanity When Banks and Much of the Establishment Profit Big Time from Illegal Drugs?
![]() |

This is the eighth article in the Truthout on the Mexican Border
series looking at US immigration and Mexican border policies through a
social justice lens. Mark Karlin, editor of BuzzFlash at Truthout,
visited the border region recently to file these reports. You can find
links to the previous coverage at the end of this article.
US Banks Love Real Dollars, and Illegal Drug Money Comes in Cash
A recent article in The Guardian UK offers
evidence that "while cocaine production ravages countries in Central
America, consumers in the US and Europe are helping developed economies
grow rich from the profits."
According to The Guardian UK story, the study by two Colombian
professors found that "2.6% of the total street value of cocaine
produced remains within the country [Columbia], while a staggering 97.4%
of profits are reaped by criminal syndicates and laundered by banks, in
first-world consuming countries."
One of the researchers, Alejandro Gaviria said: "We know that
authorities in the US and UK know far more than they act upon. The
authorities realize things about certain people they think are moving
money for the drug trade - but the DEA [US Drug Enforcement
Administration] only acts on a fraction of what it knows."
"It's taboo to go after the big banks," added Gaviria's co-researcher
Daniel Mejía. "It's political suicide in this economic climate, because
the amounts of money recycled are so high." READ MORE

The Real Scandals of Obama's Latin America Summit
By Amy Goodman, Guardian UK
21 April 12
"We let the boss down, because nobody's talking about what went on in Colombia other than this incident."
Dempsey is right. It also served as a metaphor for the US government's ongoing treatment of Latin America.
The scandal reportedly involves 11 members of the US secret service
and five members of the US Army special forces, who allegedly met
prostitutes at one or more bars in Cartagena and took up to 20 of the
women back to their hotel, some of whom may have been minors. This all
deserves thorough investigation, but so do the policy positions that
Obama promoted while in Cartagena.
First, the war on drugs. Obama stated at the summit: READ MORE

What Really Killed Andrew Breitbart? The Likely Cause of Death The Mainstream Media Ignored
Not a single mainstream media outlet or website dared to
publicly raise the question of substances. Instead, the media began
giving airtime to right-wing conspiracy theories. Want to get the latest on America's drug & rehab culture? Sign up for The Fix's newsletter here. Want to get the latest on America's drug & rehab culture? Sign up for The Fix's newsletter here.
The sudden death of a youngish
media celebrity in the early hours of the morning can usually be counted
on to provoke a torrent of salacious speculation from LA's ravenous
media gossip mill. The passing of Andrew Breitbart last Thursday was no
exception.
Breitbart, who died
at 43, was a conservative icon—a manic, maddening architect of some of
the most explosive political scandals in recent years. He played an
outsized role in some of the world's most influential news sites,
working with Matt Drudge as an editor at the Drudge Report before
helping Arianna Huffington launch the Huffington Post. More recently he
started his own successful network of conservative news websites,
including Breitbart.com, BigGovernment.com and BigHollywood.com, which
draw millions of visitors every month and earned him a hefty salary and a
high profile. But he achieved a new level of notoriety in the past two
years, after he helped orchestrate a series of crudely-edited video
stings that led to the resignation of Shirley Sherrod, a U.S. Dept. of
Agriculture executive, and the collapse of the social-advocacy
association ACORN. These and other triumphs—including the Twitter-pic
takedown of New York congressman Anthony Wiener—turned Breitbart into a
right-wing hero, a sought-after speaker on the right-wing lecture
circuit, and a regular opinionator on Fox News. READ MORE

Vets feel abandoned after secret drug experiments

By David S. Martin, CNN
March 1, 2012 -- Updated 1356 GMT (2156 HKT)
CNN) -- The moment 18-year-old Army Pvt. Tim Josephs
arrived at Edgewood Arsenal in 1968, he knew there was something
different about the place.
"It just did not look like a military base, more like a hospital,"
recalled Josephs, a Pittsburgh native. Josephs had volunteered for a
two-month assignment at Edgewood, in Maryland, lured by three-day
weekends closer to home.
"It was like a plum assignment," Josephs said. "The idea was they would test new Army field jackets, clothing, weapons and things of that nature, but no mention of drugs or chemicals."
But when he went to fill out paperwork the morning after his arrival, the base personnel were wearing white lab coats, and Josephs said he had second thoughts. An officer took him aside.
"He said, 'You volunteered for this. You're going to do it. If you don't, you're going to jail. You're going to Vietnam either way -- before or after,'" Josephs said recently.

From 1955 to 1975, military researchers at Edgewood were using not
only animals but human subjects to test a witches' brew of drugs and
chemicals. They ranged from potentially lethal nerve gases like VX and
sarin to incapacitating agents like BZ.

The military also tested tear gas, barbiturates, tranquilizers, narcotics and hallucinogens like LSD.

5 Reasons You Should Never Agree to a Police Search (Even if You Have Nothing to Hide)
February 22, 2012
Do you know what your rights are
when a police officer asks to search you? If you're like most people
I've met in my eight years working to educate the public on this topic,
then you probably don't.
It's a subject that a lot of people think they
understand, but too often our perception of police power is distorted
by fictional TV dramas, sensational media stories, silly urban myths,
and the unfortunate fact that police themselves are legally allowed to lie to us.
It wouldn't even be such a big
deal, I suppose, if our laws all made sense and our public servants
always treated us as citizens first and suspects second. But thanks to
the War on Drugs, nothing is ever that easy. When something as stupid as
stopping people from possessing marijuana came to be considered a
critical law enforcement function, innocence ceased to protect people
against police harassment. From the streets of the Bronx to the suburbs of the Nation's Capital, you never have to look hard to find victims of the bias, incompetence, andcorruption that the drug war delivers on a daily basis.
Whether
or not you ever break the law, you should be prepared to protect
yourself and your property just in case police become suspicious of you.
Let's take a look at one of the most commonly misunderstood legal
situations a citizen can encounter: a police officer asking to search
your belongings. Most people automatically give consent when police ask
to perform a search. However, I recommend saying "no" to police
searches, and here are some reasons why:
1. It's your constitutional right. READ MORE

Would We Have Drugged Up Einstein? How Anti-Authoritarianism Is Deemed a Mental Health Problem
February 20, 2012
In my career as a psychologist, I
have talked with hundreds of people previously diagnosed by other
professionals with oppositional defiant disorder, attention deficit
hyperactive disorder, anxiety disorder and other psychiatric illnesses,
and I am struck by 1) how many of those diagnosed are
essentially anti-authoritarians; and 2) how those professionals who have
diagnosed them are not.
Anti-authoritarians
question whether an authority is a legitimate one before taking that
authority seriously. Evaluating the legitimacy of authorities includes
assessing whether or not authorities actually know what they are talking
about, are honest, and care about those people who are respecting their
authority. And when anti-authoritarians assess an authority to be
illegitimate, they challenge and resist that authority—sometimes
aggressively and sometimes passive-aggressively, sometimes wisely and
sometimes not.

Latin American leaders assail U.S. drug ‘market’

By William Booth, Published: December 19
Alongside official declarations, Latin American governments have expressed growing disgust for U.S. drug consumers — both the addict and the weekend recreational user heedless of the misery and destruction stemming from their pleasures.
“Our region is seriously threatened by organized crime, but there is very little responsibility taken by the drug-consuming countries,” Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom said at a December meeting of Latin leaders in Caracas. Colom said the hemisphere was paying the price for drug consumption in the United States with “our blood, our fear and our human sacrifice.”
With transit countries facing some of the highest homicide rates in the world, so great is the frustration that the leaders are demanding that the United States and Europe consider steps toward legalization if they do not curb their appetite for drugs.
At a regional summit this month in Mexico, attended by the leaders of 11 Latin American and Caribbean countries, officials declared that “the authorities in consumer countries should explore all possible alternatives to eliminate exorbitant profits of criminals, including regulatory or market options.”
“Market options” is diplomatic code for decriminalization. READ MORE
