That is because their rhetoric is at odds with the principles needed
to underlay social freedoms and/or a democratic republic/nation
of laws and is instead a reach for a nation of loyalty to one ruling
figure. Their method of seeking power is to control the vote while
their idea of ruling is not to take any input from the public but
to decide for them. Thus while their rhetoric is about freedom
the principles they operate under are totalitarian. If they succeed
in selling themselves the public will suddenly discover that they
have surrendered their freedoms and empowered a mob of lawless
suppressors.
