There is only one reason that someone lost their life on the set of Rust. and that reason is that Alec kept the gun pointed at her while he attempted to arm it.
1. If one attempts to say that it was an accident as Alec claims it was, they are presuming that if it was an intentional act Alec would so state. Sorry, I don't believe that would be the case, but that either way Alec would still claim that it was accidental.
2. If it was accidental then, why did he carelessly keep the gun pointed at her while he attempted to arm it? His claim is that the hammer slipped and the gun unexpectedly fired. But why would the gun be pointed at anyone while he was attempting to arm it? That the gun was supposed to have contained non-lethal blanks is no excuse for aiming the weapon at anyone, less attempting to arm the weapon while doing so.
3. If it was not accidental, then that explains the events circumstances better than if it was accidental. One could speculate that the gun was actually loaded with blanks and that Alec had a live round in his pocket which he then loaded into the weapon and dropped the blank cartridge on the ground and buried it using his foot. In that case who would notice? Did anyone search the immediate ground to see if there was a blank cartridge buried there or hidden somewhere? I doubt that was the case, thus such speculation cannot be easily disproven.
It is indeed unfortunate that we have learned that Alec has a terrible temper. Which means that any number of things, no matter how innocuous seeming to us, could have set him off on a murderous rage. Hopefully, this was just an accident caused by lethal stupidity and carelessness in handling a deadly weapon. Nevertheless, the deed needs to be severely punished either way because that might dissuade any follow on attempts to copy this defense modulous.
