My guess is that Xi is hoping that the annexation of Taiwan will provide the economic boost China will so obviously need. Unfortunately what he and his government don't realize is that "freedom" is the necessary ingredient of a successful economy. Worse yet is the fact that freedom isn't what China as structured can tolerate or allow.
