It's simple really, if "they" don't like you, then they have enough knowledge about you and your business and social life to make things go wrong for you.
You didn't get that promotion? You weren't invited to that party? You've come up for a "performance review"? There's a problem with your tax filings or your car has stopped working. There are a million things they can do to cause your life to be disturbed which, if not stopped, can eventually push you over the edge.
