Steve Rattner: U.S. Economy Is Still In Shambles | Morning Joe | MSNBC

Things take time to happen, businesses take time to fail.  They reopen with hopes of regaining past performance and that hope carries them for a while even as they continue to burn cash, trying to hold on.  Then pow,  here comes a re closure and while business is slow and continuing to burn cash.  There comes a day when owners have to call it a day,  either to preserve what cash they have left, or because they've hit the wall.  Each business that closes leaves a gap up stream with suppliers and services and it takes time for those gaps to take down the upstream businesses. Trumps failure to create a national strategy and his penchant to create chaos as he struggles to do the thing that is popular at the moment,  means that everyone is on shaky ground at the mercy of travelers from bordering states and the potential for further re closures.

One two week closure early on would have allowed the nation to clear enough infections to trace the remainder and keep the pandemic under control, two weeks or so closures would not have wrecked the economy the way these uncertain fits and starts have.
