There is no such thing as a "sham trial", that is merely a construction of words because, there is either a trial; a real trial, or there is not a trial but some sort of "tomfoolery" being called a trial which it is not.
A trial is the weighing of evidence and testimony by impartial observers, selected and empowered to render a verdict, based on what they are convinced to believe about what they have heard and seen and been told. Thus it derives that Mitch McConnell is threatening to violate his Constitutional oath and duties by refusing to hold a trial on the impeachment. No real trial can include those who are predisposed in one way or the other. Those who are not capable of being impartial must be recused and/or otherwise rendered unable to issue a verdict.
