Try playing a game, any game without any rules. Of course, it's not possible! Try again, play a game where your opponent can make up new rules and change the rules as the game goes on. It doesn't work either does it? So, you can't have a nation without rules, nor can you have a nation where people are able to enjoy freedoms without rules that apply to and constrain everyone equally. If anyone gets to change the rules as they go along then no one can have any faith that there are any rules that cannot be changed or that must apply to everyone equally and not just exempt favorites/monied/politically connected.
To have a free nation people must have faith and trust in the laws that create and enshrine their freedoms, else the law cannot be trusted and if not trusted it cannot work.
Trump is ruining the public's faith and trust in the very institutions we need to protect our freedoms and rights. The costs of the decay of trust will be felt incrementally from here on out.
