The "apology" was thin and watery nor does it address the real problems it is in danger of causing. It's not the accusation alone that does the harm but the ideology that gave rise to the possibility that the accusation could be responsibly made in any way, shape, or form because it could not. It would be terribly objectionable, irresponsible, and reprehensible to accuse any Italian of being a Mussolini, any German of being a Hitler, or any Russian of being a Stalin. The only correct response for any such offending speech is to remove such a person from the company of reasonable people.

America is so far gone, so shot through with unfortunate people adverse to democracy and republicanism that it will take an almost wholesale housecleaning at every level of government to set the matter right again. It's an almost insoluble problem that seems extremely unlikely to be solved unless many Republicans and Republican voters cross over we are on course to lose our long-held and most cherished freedoms and rights over the ensuing decade.
