Donald Trump is an idiot. A powerful, terrible, idiot. On Monday Trump said that he would direct the Defense Department and the Pentagon to create an independent “Space Force.” This would be a new branch of the armed forces of the United States of America and technically—constitutionally speaking—would need an act of Congress to actually exist.
Trump: My administration is reclaiming America’s heritage as the world’s greatest space-faring nation...It is not enough to have an American presence in space; we must have an American dominance in space…Very importantly, I’m hereby directing the Department of Defense and Pentagon to immediately begin the process necessary to establish a “Space Force,” as the 6th branch of the armed forces. That’s a big statement. We are going to have the “Air Force,” and we are going to have the “Space Force.”Separate but equal.
There has never been a single thing described as “separate but equal” that has ever worked out to be anything but a terrible and undemocratic idea. Of course, Trump and the Republican Party’s opinions on the infamous Plessy v. Ferguson case from which that racist phrase comes from is likely different than history’s opinion on the matter.
