Note that scientific discovery back then was so rudimentary that research
as it was, could be carried on by a single actor and not, as today, mechanical
methods and teams are needed to conquer the awesome complexity as
the fronts of science march on. For example the LHC (large hadron
collider, The Hubble and James Webb space telescopes require large
teams and large investments that require large very stable political/gov.
