While it is indeed fortunate that the most dire predictions, based on epidemiology, did not materialize, you must remember that when the news broke and the virus was confirmed, there was no other defense other than shutting down to save the lives and prevent the health resources from being overwhelmed. We did not want to put doctors in the position of having to decide who lives and who dies. The shutdown was the only weapon we had, nor was anything knowable, everything was dependent upon educated guesses based on the practical knowledge of the experts whose job has been to deal with such matters. Now that the measures and sacrifices have worked and thus appear to have been overkill, make no mistake, there was no way to know any better.
