Don't forget, people are able to safely tolerate a few minutes exposure to harsh UV light, which means that wide areas, like subway platforms can benefit to UV flashes even while populated. Remember how long it takes to sunburn? Meaning that UV light is tolerable at certain levels for short periods of time. Of course people would probably need to be advised to look away from the sources when they're deployed. Something to think about to keep safe.

People cannot tolerate these high intensity UV lights, designed to kill viruses in fractions of a second. But the sun is also a source of UV radiation and that doesn't kill people. It does kill viruses, but not in fractions of a second. Which suggests that lower intensity UV light sources in places like subway cars, platforms, busses, airplanes and similar places, can do much to lower if not eliminate contagion. It's a matter of intensity over time.
