Write-in candidates have the toughest haul in politics, therefore if someone can win as a write-in candidate, they're probably going to be unbeatable by any newcomer absent some cataclysmic scandal. If my estimation is correct, the insanity only extends to the very top and bottom of the Republican Party, everyone else in the middle is actually a "silent majority" that can and probably will cause the lunatics to go down in flames.
