Bolton's patriotism was never in question by anyone who opposed his offers. We didn't like his warmongering, we believed it wrong headed but it was never criminal, there was never any push for a criminal conspiracy to achieve any of his desired objectives. Thus, when his experience told him that the line between political and criminal was being crossed, he knew how harmful that would be for his beloved country, he "threw himself on the rocks" in effect for America. While Trump tried to take a bite out of McConnell's soul, Mitch swatted him away with a deadly warning! Mitch can probably slay the Trump dragon, and that swipe Trump took at him is probably eating away at Mitch's support in Trump, his confidence in Trump has left long ago. McConnell knows not to get too close to Trump.
