This is the kind of demonizing that was done to blacks after the civil war ended slavery.  They began tarring blacks as criminals, rapists, thieves and killers, when nothing could have been further from the truth.  But it was so easy to buy into this fear mongering that a great new American tragedy unfolded at the hands of racists, who knew how objectionable, what they were doing, was that they contrived to become "invisible".
