I have no idea how many people have noticed that dictatorships do not have law books. The reason for this is that written law or statute could interfere with the dictator's ability to do whatever he or she wanted to do at some moment in time. To avoid this problem they do not have law libraries or even less law books at all. Dictators need to preserve their ability to make up "law" on the fly, make it to be whatever they want or need it to be at any given time.

Sorry Professors but although we won't turn authoritarian right away, once the voting and other institutions are broken, authoritarianism cannot be stopped from creeping along. Our Consitution is no longer either understood or respected, it has been set aside a number of times and the idea of fairness and all are not going to be supported by the USSC. We are in very deep trouble because the principles that made our bill of rights possible are nearly gone and there are enough "goons" armed and ready to support insanity.

Putin is keeping the pressure up, my guess is it helps him politically at home. Brinksmanship is always aggrandizing for dictators with a society that has known little else in the way of being governed. Putin will keep this up until objections at home are swept away then he'll calm down. I think that Xi is operating from the same playbook. But that's just my guess.
After all, no one can benefit from a nuclear holocaust, but brinksmanship, if well played can be very popular at home, just as any well-managed crisis. Our foreign policy experts can handle this much better than any dictators can, no matter how skilled they are.

Shrink government, really? Government is what protected the greatest number of people from "new age technology" that nobody really understood. There is always a "mad race" to make money on new discoveries but all the actors are not sufficiently well versed or informed of what they're doing. Even when do's and don'ts are learned it is government regulations and institutions that make these measures available to all. Something to think about the next time you hear someone say they want to shrink government down to where they can drown it in a bathtub.
