What possible advantage is there for Putin in acquiring an ongoing insurgency that will continue long after he ceases his military invasion? Hasn't Russia enough problems without seeking to take on a battle that promises to be never-ending? I'm afraid Putin's once laudable smarts have deteriorated with age to the point where they have degraded long past the utility needed to manage a country successfully by consent of the governed. Of course that Russia is a democratic republic is just rhetoric, what they call law books are merely books of assertions and suggestions.
