'Nightmare situation for Facebook': What the Trump ruling means
The rule should take into account the fact that lies by public (and former public) figures have an outsized effect on the public discourse that can be extraordinarily dangerous. Ordinary citizen posters are not considered to be trusted sources of information. Thus, such claims, assertions, or other material posted by them will be mercilessly fact-checked before reaching the "mainstream". While the words of a President or former President will receive much less if any, consideration or fact-checking before being broadcast to a wide swath of the public by trusted sources of media attention.
