This flip flopping reveals the Presidents childlike mental state. He's working with very childish elements (bribery) in very childlike ways (You want money? Then vote for me! Not one adult like thought that maybe his past actions have any impact on what people might think about how his next term might work out. We're focused on deaths vs recovered when we should be focused on deaths and injured then recovered. If we get all three figures we'd have a better idea of how dangerous this virus really is. It has multiple methods of injuring victims who do not get killed, but we don't get that figure. We do hear talk of "long haulers", those who spend a long time suffering.

In short it appears to me that Trump is bullying and bulldozing the doctors around using his rank to obliterate their protocols. It is very easy to imagine Trump pulling rank and threatening mayhem, causing everyone to back away and seek alternative routes that while not recommended, seem to satisfy the doctors need to soothe their conscience.

Taking the pandemic seriously early on in February, when there were very few cases. Contact tracing would have been practical and easy while wearing masks would have kept the spread very low. Much as we've seen in other countries that responded quickly and avoided the sort of long shutdown and the tumultuous openings and re-closings we're going through now. This state by state approach creates a crazy-quilt patchwork of protocols that keeps things stirred up as we can and do move freely from state to state. Trump could have provided a national approach that would have been uniform across the country and eliminated the confusion. The result is that any shutdown could have been kept to a minimum, probably just parts of the international entry point states. Obtaining the satisfactory results many poorer nations have achieved. Gaslighting will not obsfuscate the truth.
