Pardons don't mean we cannot find out what they were up to. Because a pardon doesn't mean one cannot be questioned. It means that if they are questioned under oath, they must not tell any lies, because that will expose them to new charges. But most importantly, having been pardoned means the witness cannot take the fifth. Because they cannot be charged with crimes for which they have been pardoned, they can no longer claim that their answer might incriminate them. Therefore they must answer the questions truthfully or risk a new court case.
