It will take decades to restore American institutions, simply because we can no longer trust the "checks and balances" the Founders built into the system.  They aren't trustworthy because they rely too much on the honor system, where it supposes that the branches of government would all jealously guard their turf and not simply surrender in the name of keeping the status quo and holding their precious seats in Congress/government.
