When Trump came to visit Russia for his beauty contest, the Russians would routinely arrange to compromise him and any American because the KGB knew that one cannot tell who will eventually prove to be useful.  Trump is ignorant of politics and spycraft and he would take no adivice on such matters.  With his high hopes of meeting Putin having been expressed,  he'd be extremely vulnerable to KGB tactics because his stated hopes would be great bait.  Meaning Trump could be lured anywhere at anytime, with the mere promise of meeting Putin.   

Because of Trump's high profile he would make an excellent target for compromise, much better than the usual tourist they often have to work with and with even greater promise.  Further, by dangling the promise of a Trump Tower Moscow, Putin would know that the compromise had worked.  Thus, when Trump entered the race, the Kremlin knew who they could count on, because they knew who could not turn them down.
