The Bible: So Misunderstood It's A Sin

They wave their Bibles at passersby, screaming their condemnations of homosexuals. They fall on their knees, worshipping at the base of granite monuments to the Ten Commandments while demanding prayer in school. They appeal to God to save America from their political opponents, mostly Democrats. They gather in football stadiums by the thousands to pray for the country’s salvation.

They are God’s frauds, cafeteria Christians who pick and choose which Bible verses they heed with less care than they exercise in selecting side orders for lunch. They are joined by religious rationalizers—fundamentalists who, unable to find Scripture supporting their biases and beliefs, twist phrases and modify translations to prove they are honoring the Bible’s words.

This is no longer a matter of personal or private faith. With politicians, social leaders and even some clergy invoking a book they seem to have never read and whose phrases they don’t understand, America is being besieged by Biblical illiteracy. Climate change is said to be impossible because of promises God made to Noah; Mosaic law from the Old Testament directs American government; creationism should be taught in schools; helping Syrians resist chemical weapons attacks is a sign of the end times—all of these arguments have been advanced by modern evangelical politicians and their brethren, yet none of them are supported in the Scriptures as they were originally written.

Former Federal Prosecutor: McCulloch Violated Rules Of Professional Conduct In Brown Case

St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch gave an interview to local radio station KTRS following the news that witness 40 invented her testimony and likely perjured herself in front of the grand jury, and as we've come to expect from McCulloch, he was as unrepentant as ever about his decision to put her on the stand and on the way he conducted the grand jury hearing.
Some witnesses lied to Michael Brown grand jury, McCulloch says. So why have them testify?:
Certain witnesses who spoke before the grand jury investigating the Aug. 9 shooting of Michael Brown told obvious lies under oath, St. Louis Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch said Friday.

Key takeaway from torture report: Dick Cheney is a dirty, stinking liar

DIRTY DICK
Former Vice President Dick Cheney, in 2011, peddling one of his favorite claims in defense of torture:
"One of the most controversial techniques is waterboarding ... And the one who was subjected the most often to that was Khaled Sheikh Mohammed, and it produced phenomenal results for us." [...]

Cheney said that waterboarding Khaled Sheikh Mohammed "helped produce the intelligence that allowed us to get Osama bin Laden."
And today, from the initial release on the torture report:
The committee reviewed 20 of the most frequent and prominent examples of purported "successes" that the CIA has attributed to the use of its enhanced interrogation techniques. Each of those examples was found to be wrong.  READ MORE

17 Disgraceful Facts Buried In The Senate’s 600 Page Torture Report

CREDIT: AP
Posted on
The Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on the CIA’s extensive use of torture reveals that the agency regularly misled the White House and Congress about the information it had obtained from detainees and used techniques that are far more brutal than it — or former Bush administration officials — had previously acknowledged.

For instance, President George W. Bush insisted that “[t]his government does not torture people” and claimed that the intelligence it produced was instrumental to preventing terrorism on American soil and capturing high-value targets, including Osama bin Laden. But the Committee’s five year investigation — and examination of more than six million CIA documents — reveals all of those assertions to be false

For its part, the CIA acknowledged that it “did not always live up to the high standards that we set for ourselves” and “made mistakes” in how it ran the program, particularly “early on” when the CIA “was unprepared and lacked the core competencies required.” However, it insisted that “there are too many flaws for [this report] to stand as the official record of the program” and strongly disputed “that the agency’s assessments were willfully misrepresented in a calculated effort to manipulate.”

Republicans are similarly shielding the agency from criticism, claiming that the report is “ideologically motivated and distorted recounting of historical events.” “The fact that the CIA’s Detention and Interrogation program developed significant intelligence that helped us identify and capture important al-Qa’ida terrorists, disrupt their ongoing plotting, and take down Usama Bin Ladin is incontrovertible,” Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said in a statement.  READ MORE

WASHINGTON — The CIA abused dozens of terror suspects in the years after 9/11, misled policymakers about what it was doing and then falsely claimed the harsh interrogations made America safer, a scathing Senate report charged Tuesday.

Beginning in 2002, the interrogations played out at secret, shadowy detention facilities in Asia and Eastern Europe, including an Afghanistan site called the “dungeon.”

The tough tactics included stripping suspects, depriving them of sleep for days at a time, waterboarding them, and confining them in boxes. Some were placed in ice baths, or force-fed rectally. Captives were slapped, slammed against walls, and bombarded with threats that they would be killed or family members would be harmed.

A law enforcement interview with a key witness to the fatal shooting of Michael Brown doesn’t appear to be included among thousands of pages of documents released after a grand jury decided not to indict a Ferguson, Mo., police officer in the case.

The Associated Press reviewed more than 5,700 pages of documents released by St. Louis County prosecutors, but found no transcript or recording of a two-hour FBI and county police interview with Brown’s friend Dorian Johnson, who was with the 18-year-old when he was shot. The discrepancy was first reported by KSDK-TV.

The documents include seven video clips of Johnson’s media interviews, as well as a transcript of his testimony to the grand jury that investigated the shooting.

The transcript notes that jurors listened to a recording of an Aug. 13 interview of Johnson by the federal and county investigators, but documents released to the public don’t appear to include a separate transcript of that August interview. READ MORE

Senate Report Reveals That the CIA Torture Program Was Just As Bad As Feared

Photo: IKONOS/Space Imaging Middle East/Reuters/Corbis
The newlyreleased 500-plus-page executive summary of the Senate Intelligence Committee's torture report delivers a scathing critique of the CIA's post-9/11 interrogation programs, revealing previously unknown abuses, deceptions of the media, and attempts to avoid Congressional oversight.

Among the horrifying abuses detailed in the Senate report: Waterboarding, a torture mechanism that brings the subject to the verge of drowning, was far more popular than the CIA had let on; "rectal feedings" and "rectal hydrations" were used to strip detainees of any measures of autonomy; and a particularly damning segment of the report notes that the CIA did not punish an agent who killed a detainee in the course of interrogations. The summary is based on millions of documents surveyed over five years, and is just a fraction of the length of the full, still-classified, 6,000-page report.

Thanks, GOP! Michigan Is Now A Theocracy And They're Coming For Your State Next

A new religious tyranny act has been fast tracked in Michigan, and is not waiting for the Senate to pass it.

Christian special pleading has hit my home state, and soon, it'll be coming to yours, too, in the wake of the November Republican sweep.

My state was the birth place of the Republican party, back when they were the good guys - back when they were the party of anti-slavery, when they had a progressive wing that included presidents like Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. Michigan has always been seen as a blue state, but the truth is much different: we're mostly Detroit, Ann Arbor, Bay City, and to a lesser extent, Flint, surrounded by the very worst of Mississippi. In 179 fatalities involving on-duty NYPD cops in 15 years

EXCLUSIVE: In 179 fatalities involving on-duty NYPD cops in 15 years, only 3 cases led to indictments — and just 1 conviction

A Daily News analysis of NYPD-involved deaths starts with the 1999 slaying of unarmed Amadou Diallo in a hail of bullets in the Bronx and ends with last month’s shooting death of Akai Gurley in a Brooklyn stairwell. Where race was known, 86% were black or Hispanic.

A Staten Island grand jury’s decision not to indict white NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo for the chokehold death of Eric Garner — a black father of six — stunned large swaths of the city and added fuel to a nationwide surge of protests over police killings.

But history shows the odds were always in Pantaleo’s favor.

A Daily News investigation found that at least 179 people were killed by on-duty NYPD officers over the past 15 years. Just three of the deaths have led to an indictment in state court. In another case, a judge threw out the indictment on technical grounds and it was not reinstated.

Only one officer who killed someone while on duty has been convicted, but he was not sentenced to jail time.

The analysis of the police-involved deaths begins with the 1999 slaying of unarmed Amadou Diallo in a hail of bullets and ends with last month’s shooting death of Akai Gurley, who police say was hit by a ricocheting bullet fired by a rookie cop in a darkened housing project stairwell in Brooklyn. Gurley was also unarmed.

Video: Police lied. Mike Brown was killed 148 feet away from Darren Wilson's SUV

For 104 days, the police have lied and said Mike Brown was killed 35 feet away from Darren Wilson's SUV. It was actually 148 feet. This distance is essential to the defense and how Darren Wilson must demonstrate that he "reasonably feared for his safety." At the point in which Mike Brown ran half a football field away, how reasonable is it for an armed officer to fear anyone? On the afternoon of August 9, 2014, Officer Darren Wilson shot and killed Mike Brown, an unarmed teenager, in Ferguson, Missouri. Below is the first video filmed from Canfield Drive, where the shooting occurred, showing the exact measurement between where Darren Wilson's SUV was parked and Mike Brown died. After that, we methodically debunk the lie that Mike Brown was killed in close proximity to Darren Wilson's SUV. Our starting point, which is 17 feet behind the driver's side window of Darren Wilson's SUV, is this yellow fire hydrant next to the storm drain. READ MORE

French scientists have unveiled the genetic mechanism by which they believe two m

Paris (AFP) - French scientists said Tuesday they had found the genetic mechanism by which two HIV-infected men may have experienced a "spontaneous cure", and said it offered a new strategy in the fight against AIDS. Both men were infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), one of them 30 years ago, but never developed AIDS symptoms. The AIDS-causing virus remained in their immune cells but was inactivated because its genetic code had been altered, the scientists said. The change appeared to be linked to increased activity of a common enzyme named APOBEC, they theorised. The "apparent spontaneous cure" throws up an intriguing avenue for drug engineers, the team said in a statement. "The work opens up therapeutic avenues for a cure, using or stimulating this enzyme, and avenues for identifying individuals among newly-infected patients who have a chance of a spontaneous cure." The work, published in the journal Clinical Microbiology and Infection, was carried out by scientists at France's Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm). HIV replicates by invading human CD4 immune cells, which it reprogrammes to become virus factories. A rare group of people -- fewer than one percent of those infected -- are naturally able to rein in viral replication and keep the virus at clinically undetectable levels. They are known as "elite controllers", but the mechanism by which they keep the virus at bay remains a mystery. The French group looked at two such individuals, a 57-year-old man diagnosed HIV-positive in 1985, and a 23-year-old diagnosed in 2011, and sequenced their virus genomes. Though they remained infected, standard tests could not detect the virus in their blood. The team found that in both cases, the virus was unable to replicate in immune cells due to mutations in its genetic code. The researchers suggested spontaneous evolution between humans and the virus, a process called "endogenisation" that is believed to have neutralised other viruses in humans in the past. READ MORE

The Price of American Eugenics

Forty years later, only one state is making reparations for thousands of forced sterilizations. From the early decades of the 20th century until 1974, 32 states in the union mandated the sterilization of more than 65,000 citizens. At the behest of government eugenics boards, girls and women had their tubes tied or uteri removed, and boys and men their vasa deferentia snipped because they had been deemed unfit to reproduce. Still others came under the scalpel of private doctors, and this second group makes the calculations difficult—65,000 represents only the number of sterilizations where there was municipal paperwork. In 2013, the North Carolina General Assembly passed the Eugenics Compensation statute, and last week the state’s department of commerce began the long-awaited disbursement of financial reparations to victims of sterilization. Two hundred twenty living victims will receive checks of $20,000 each—220 checks, out of 768 claims. Between 1929 and 1974, North Carolina sterilized at least 7,600 people. However mortifying the disparity here, we must give the Assembly credit for passing legislation that no other state has so far brought to a vote; by contrast, California has kept positively mum about its own similar history, which accounts for a third of all American sterilizations. A teacher is back in the classroom after reportedly telling students that she'd kill all black people if she only had one week to live.

How is the school administration comfortable that, a teacher, who, obviously hates blacks (innocent or not), is now, or has been treating black children fairly? Is she undermining black children surreptitiously? Is she finding ways to damage their self esteem? Directing snide and/or dismissive remarks to whatever black children have to offer? So many ways she can covertly work to hurt the black students entrusted to her care. Yet, the administrators feel there's nothing to be concerned about? Perhaps they feel the same way she does? Just a few thoughts that come to mind.

Student's Mom Says Teacher Told Class She'd Kill All Black People If She Had 10 Days To Live

A teacher is back in the classroom after reportedly telling students that she'd kill all black people if she only had one week to live. Untitled-1-Recovered-Recovered-Recovered A North Carolina teacher is under investigation after a parent notified school officials of an incredibly racist remark she made during class. Cynthia Ramsey, a math teacher at Camden County High School, was talking to a student in a classroom when she brought up her "bucket list." "She conveyed to me that Mrs. Ramsey had indicated that if she only had 10 days to live that she would kill all black people," Kimberly Ashcraft, the student's mother, told WAVY-TV. Other students were around, and confirmed that the teacher had made the remark. "I was completely shocked," Ashcraft said. "I asked her again, 'are you sure that was what you heard?' I could not have imagined a teacher saying that." Read More

White House Remains Silent On IRS Extortion Of Innocent Americans

On Monday, I wrote about the IRS practice of emptying private bank accounts when it appears to the government that there exists a pattern of bank deposits seeking to skirt the bank reporting laws requiring all deposits of $10,000 or more to be reported by the bank to the government.

The seizures are the result of a law passed in 2000 requiring banks to look for and report ‘structuring’ cases where bank deposits by an individual or business reveal a pattern of depositing sums just below the $10,000 reporting trigger in an effort to hide large deposits from the government.
The point of the law is to help the federal government hone in on terrorists, drug dealers and other criminals who deal in large sums of cash.

As noted in my earlier piece, the most recent statistics indicate that the law has gone wildly off-course with approximately 80 percent of those who had their accounts seized in 2012 turning out to be completely innocent people who did not meet the profile of a  terrorist, drug dealer or any other sort of criminal that the law was created to impact.

While I suppose one can argue that mistakes happen—particularly when the government is involved—one might also suppose that, upon learning of the error, the IRS would be all too anxious to return the money, with interest and damages, along with a profound apology for any damage done.
Not so much.  READ MORE
