Herman Cain beats President Obama in latest poll with another GOP debate on tap

GOP candidate Herman Cain has been slowly gaining on President Obama in recent weeks.

WASHINGTON - Herman Cain enters the Republican presidential debate Tuesday night with soaring poll numbers - and a bull's-eye on his back.

Republican rivals will be hustling to knock Cain down a peg, likely by targeting his "9-9-9" tax plan and probing his grasp of federal policy.

"They will need to knock Cain off his game, show he has holes in his experience," said Democratic media strategist Julian Mulvey.The former CEO of Godfather's Pizza has ridden his tax plan - which calls for a 9% personal and corporate income tax and a 9% sales tax - and a host of catchy phrases to the front of the GOP field.

The 65-year-old political neophyte is now in a dead heat with Mitt Romney for the GOP nomination, a new CNN poll found.
